Description

Difficult conversations occur in all areas of our lives, with colleagues, clients, families and even personal relationships. Understanding what contributes to our perception of difficult conversation, aspects that make them difficult and how we are wired to respond, will help to expand your ability to engage in ways that are helpful, instead of stressful. In this workshop participants will learn skills and strategies to navigate difficult conversation with more ease and wisdom, which contributes to more positive outcomes.

Session Objective

Participants will learn about the neurobiology of difficult conversations. They will develop an understanding of what contributes to escalation and the emotions and behaviours associated with difficult conversations. Participants will learn how to self-regulate before and during difficult conversations, as well as learn strategies that help others to self-regulate. Facilitators use a variety of activities and small and large group conversations to explore how language shapes behaviour and the difference between wants and needs, to better respond in challenging circumstances. Learners will also debrief a simulation of an escalation and subsequent de-escalation, using the techniques learned.
