Confronting Ableism in Our Professional Practices

Participants will deepen their understanding of ableism and its pervasive presence in our society, with a specific focus on the education and healthcare systems, including early years programming. Participants will explore the impact of ableism on their roles as educators, consultants and administrators, and discover strategies to embrace anti-ableist practices. Fostering critical thinking and reflection on individual beliefs about disability, unravel the various Models of Disability, and be equipped to be effective allies for the disability community. Participants will be provided with resources and materials that empower ongoing learning and advocacy for anti-ableist practices.

 

Speaker biography

Kristin Hayes is a speech language pathologist, passionate disability advocate, and world traveler. Kristin graduated with a Master’s degree in Clinical Science from Western University in 2010 and has worked for nearly 13 years with the adult and geriatric population at Providence Healthcare on their inpatient stroke and neuro rehabilitation unit. In addition, Kristin began work with home and community care support services in 2022, providing consultation for clients in the long term care setting. Kristin sits on numerous committees dedicated to innovation and quality improvement, including the newly formed Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at Providence. Kristin proudly brings her perspective on disability to her practice and draws upon her own past experience as a patient receiving rehabilitation services, both as a child and adult.

Session Objective

Each month, Toronto Children's Services will host a webinar featuring subject matter experts who will speak on various topics, including outdoor learning, ableism, disabilities and accessibility, as well as reconciliation and Indigenous cultural awareness.
