The Mental Health Commission of Canada has introduced an initiative, Mental Health First Aid, aimed at increasing awareness and support for those suffering from mental illness. This evidence-based course is designed to increase awareness, de-stigmatize mental disorders, and give people the skills and confidence to identify, intervene, and manage mental health problems in themselves or others.

MHFA shares the same overall purpose as traditional first aid. It aims to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state.
  • Promote the recovery of good mental health.
  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.

Receiving this certification is beneficial for several reasons:

1 - As a way to increase awareness and intervention skills

2 - It adds additional professional credibility to resumes and employment portfolios

3 - It builds a culture of care and support within communities and organizations

Session Objective

  • This workshop will provide participants with training in Mental Health First Aid.  After the completion of all three modules, all participants will become certified in Mental Health First Aid.  This is a lifetime certification which requires no future recertification.
